Why in news?
- The Central Vista redevelopment project would lead to employment generation and could be “an important fulcrum of economic revival”, according to the government’s reply to a question in the Lok Sabha
Central Vista:
- It is the 3.5km corridor in Delhi that stretches from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhavan.
- The stretch was created during the colonial period when the capital of India was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi (1911).
- Many buildings were designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker.
What is the project?
- It is project that aims to redevelop central vista,
- The redevelopment is expected to bring together many central government offices scattered across Delhi into this single stretch.
- It will also improve the capacities and capabilities of current buildings, many of which date to colonial era.
- The project is managed by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry.
About the Project:
- The redevelopment project of Central Vista includes
- A triangular Parliament building next to the existing one
- A common Central Secretariat
- New residences for Prime minister and Vice President
- Revamping of the 3-km-long Rajpath — from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate.
- Many current buildings in the area including that of Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Udyog Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Shashtri Bhawan, vice-president”s residence are likely to be demolished to pave the way for the construction of a common Central Secretariat to house various ministries.
- The common Central Secretariat
- It is likely to comprise 10 buildings, four on each side of the Central Vista.
- Each building will have eight floors, which will house various ministries.
- The draft masterplan was drawn up by Ahmedabad-based HCP Design, Planning and Management.
