Chinese dams in Brahmaputra

Why in news?

  • China’s media reported that authorities have given the go-ahead for a Chinese hydropower company to construct the first downstream dam on the lower reaches of the Brahmaputra river.

About the new and existing Dams:

  • Zangmu dam was completed in 2010 and became fully operational from 2015. It is a gravity dam and a big reason for concern for India. It has the biggest hydel-power station of the world.
  • Three more dams are presently under construction at Dagu, Jiacha and Jeixu, , all on the upper and middle reaches of the river.

                                                  

  • The new dam in Medog will come up at the site just 30 km away from the Indian border inside a giant canyon of the Brahmaputra.
  • It is the first downstream dam on the lower reaches of the Brahmaputra river and is located on the canyon along the bent of the river before it enter India.
