Why in News?

  • The Commonwealth Secretariat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with 'eXXpedition', a non-profit organisation that runs all-women sailing expeditions to research the causes of and solutions to marine plastic pollution.

About Commonwealth of Nations

  • Commonwealth of Nations is an intergovernmental organisation of 53 member states that are mostly former territories of the British Empire.
  • The chief institutions of the organisation are the Commonwealth Secretariat, which focuses on intergovernmental aspects, and the Commonwealth Foundation, which focuses on non-governmental relations between member states.
  • Commonwealth of Nations was formally constituted by the London Declaration in 1949.
  • Member states have no legal obligations to one another. Instead, they are united by language, history, culture and their shared values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
