About Miyawaki Method
- The method, used to grow mini forests in urban areas or land destroyed by natural calamities in Japan, was popularised by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki.
- The Miyawaki method, developed by a Japanese botanist after whom it is named, involves planting saplings in small areas, causing them to “fight” for resources and grow nearly 10 times quicker.
- It has revolutionised the concept of urban afforestation by turning backyards into mini forests.
- The Miyawaki method, also called the Potted Seedling Method, uses native species to create dense, multilayered forests.
- Its benefits include lowering temperature, making soil nutritious, supporting local wildlife and sequestration of carbon.
- The issue with this method can be its high cost as the cost of preparing the soil and land can be high for a land in a degraded state.
