Why in news?
- The state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited achieved a major milestone by successfully test-firing a Smart Anti Airfield Weapon (SAAW) from the Hawk-i aircraft off the coast of Odisha.
About SAAW:
- The DRDO Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAAW) is a long-range precision-guided anti-airfield weapon.
- It was developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
- It is designed to be capable of engaging ground targets with high precision up to a range of 100 kilometres.
- The SAAW project was approved by the Government of India in 2013.
- It is India's first fully indigenous anti-airfield weapon, has deep penetration capabilities and carries a high explosive warhead.
- It is capable of engaging ground enemy airfield assets such as radars, bunkers, taxi tracks, and runways etc. up to a range of 100 kms.
- The SAAW can currently be launched from the Jaguar and Su-30MKI aircraft.
