What is it?

  • The Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai is a collection of 19th century Victorian Neo Gothic public buildings and 20th century Art Deco Cultural sites & Monuments buildings in the Fort area of Mumbai.
  • This ensemble of Victorian Gothic and Art Deco buildings was added to the list of World Heritage Sites in 2018.
  • The Victorian assemblage of grand public buildings created an Indo-Gothic style by blending Gothic revival elements with Indian elements, with adaptations in response to the local climate by introducing balconies and verandas.
  • Victorian assemblage is divided into sub-styles of Neo-Gothic, Neo-Classical and Indo-Saracenic.
  • This collection of the Victorian Gothic buildings and Art Deco buildings are set around the Oval Maidan, a large recreational ground that was once known as the Esplanade.
