Why in news?

  • Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS) highlights the emerging problems of overweight, obesity and micro-nutrient deficiencies among Indian children.

What is Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey?

  • The Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS) is a nationally representative and comprehensive nutritional survey profiling children and adolescents (ages 0–19) in India to better understand the magnitude of micronutrient deficiencies as well as correlates and risk factors associated with them.
  • The survey recorded not only micronutrient deficiencies but also details of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and kidney function in children and adolescents

Conducted by:

  • Population Council in partnership with UNICEF and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare conducted the first Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey to assess the malnutrition burden amongst children and adolescents in India.

Key findings of the survey:

  • It shows that there are 35% stunted and 33% thin (underweight) among children less than 5 years in India. Also 5% are overweight.
  • Nearly 10% of children in the age group of 5-9 years and adolescents in the age group of 10-19 years are pre-diabetic.
  • 7% of children and adolescents have risk of chronic kidney disease.
  • 5% of adolescents (aged 10-19) suffer from high blood pressure
  • The first time hard evidence of the coexistence of obesity and undernutrition, among school-going children has been recorded.
