IN NEWS:
- The United States State has raised concerns that China and Russia may have conducted nuclear tests, in violation of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) undertakings.
CTBT:
- CTBT obligates countries not to carry out any nuclear weapon test explosion or any other nuclear explosion.
- It was negotiated at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.
- It provides for an extensive verification regime, including an International Monitoring System (IMS) and an International Data Center (IDC).
- Since its inception, India has had a number of reservations about the CTBT. Hence, India has not signed the treaty.
