Why in news?

  • The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has started laying tracks on the Sahibabad-Duhai stretch -- the 17km priority section -- for the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), officials said on Tuesday.
  • The officials also said that the production of train coaches for the project has started at a plant in Savli, Gujarat.

About the RRTS project:

  • Delhi- Ghaziabad - Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (Delhi–Meerut RRTS) is an 82.15 km long, under-construction, semi-high speed rail corridor connecting Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut.
  • It is one of the three rapid-rail corridors planned under Phase-I of Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS) project of National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).
  • With maximum speed of 160 km/h, the distance between Delhi and Meerut will be covered in less than 60 minutes.
  • The entire 82 kms long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor will be operational by 2025.
  • It is expected to shift the modal share in favour of public transport from 37% to 63% in the region, which ultimately helps in curbing pollution.

National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC)

  • The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is a Joint Venture company of Government of India and States of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
  • It is mandated for implementing the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project across the National Capital Region (NCR).
  • Three RRTS projects are being undertaken currently
    • Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut
    • Delhi-Gurugram-SNB-Alwar: a proposed 164 km long, semi-high speed rail corridor connecting Delhi, Gurugram, Rewari and Alwar.
    • Delhi-Sonipat-Panipat: proposed, 103 km (64 mi) long, semi-high-speed rail corridor.
  • RRTS stations would be integrated with various modes of public transport systems like Airport, Indian Railway Stations, Inter-State Bus Terminus, Delhi Metro Stations, wherever possible.
