Why in news?
- Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region recently asked for suggestions for the Devika River project in Udhampur, J&K
About the river and the project:
- Devika river originates from the hills in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir and flows down towards Punjab in Pakistan where it merges with the Ravi river.
- The river is revered by Hindus as the sister of river Ganga.
- Devika River project is a Rs. 190 crore Project that started in March 2019 under the National River Conservation Plan (NRCP).
- Under the project, Encroachments will be removed and Catchment areas of the river will be developed.
- Bathing “ghats” (places), cremation grounds on the banks of the Devika River will be developed with a focus on pollution reduction.
