'Health Star' rating system of FSSAI

2022 FEB 25

Preliminary   > Social Justice   >   Health   >   Health

Why in news?

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is starting a star rating system for packaged foods just like the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has for electronic appliances.

About the system:

  • This system will be similar to the one that is being used by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency for assessing the energy efficiency in electrical devices.
  • As per the 'Health Star' rating system, packaged foods will display the number of stars on the front of the pack, indicating how healthy or unhealthy it is depending upon the amount of salt, sugar and fat it has.
  • Consumers will be able to tell whether their food packaging is harmful or healthy and nutritious.

Parameters:

  • The amount of fats, sugar, and salt in the food item will be used to determine the rating.
  • This is decided as per the study conducted by IIM Ahmedabad regarding the methodology to be used to display the health ratings of the food items
