Why in news?
- India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC-1), INS Vikrant has successfully completed the fourth and final phase of sea trials.
About INS Vikrant:
- INS Vikrant is India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC-1). Designed by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design (DND) and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).
- Vikrant is named after the Majestic-class aircraft carrier, which was operated by the Indian Navy from 1961 to 1997.
- The Indian Navy now have two functional aircraft carriers:
- INS Vikrant
- INS Vikramaditya.
- Moreover, with this launch, India has joined a select band of countries such as the USA, UK, France, Russia, Italy and China that have niche capabilities in designing and building an Aircraft Carrier.
