Why in news?
- Recently, a new conservation tool was launched by IUCN – ‘green status of species’ - to provide a richer picture of a species’ conservation status by detailing how close it is to recovering its original population size and health.
About IUCN Green Status of Species:
- IUCN Red List of Threatened Species provide information and analyses on the status, trends and threats to species in order to inform and catalyse action for biodiversity conservation
- IUCN Green Status of Species aims to complement the IUCN Red List by providing a tool for assessing the recovery of species’ populations and measuring their conservation success.
- Green Status species includes:
- Pink pigeon (Mauritius), Sumatran rhino, Burrowing bettong (Australia) etc.
