Why in news?

• The defence ministry signed the 150th contract for defence innovation under a framework called “iDEX" that was launched by Prime Minister.

About Innovations for Defence Excellence (IDEX):

• iDEX is an initiative taken by the government to contribute towards modernization of the Defence Industry. It was launched in 2018.
• It promotes innovation and technology development in Defence and Aerospace by engaging Industries.
• It will provide the engaging industries with funding and other support to carry out Research & Development.
  • It is aimed at providing financial support to nearly 300 start-ups, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), individual innovators and 20 partner incubators under the DIO framework.
• iDEX will be funded and managed by Defence Innovation Organization (DIO), and will function as the executive arm of DIO.
