Why in news?

  • The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for war crimes for President Vladimir Putin and a second Russian official.
  • This is the first time that the ICC has issued an arrest warrant against top leader of one of the five permanent members of the UNSC.

About International Criminal Court:

  • The International Criminal Court (ICC) is an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal.
  • Governed by an international treaty called the Rome Statute, the ICC is the world’s first permanent international criminal court.
  • It located at the Hague, Netherlands

What are the Functions of ICC?

  • The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression.
  • Trials are conducted under a hybrid common law and civil law judicial system.
  • As a court of last resort, it seeks to complement, not replace, national Courts.
