Why in news
- Thee fifth Scorpene class submarine, INS 'Vagir' , of Project 75 has been launched.
About Scorpene-class submarines
- These are a class of diesel-electric attack submarines jointly developed by the French Direction des Constructions Navales (DCN) and the Spanish company Navantia, and now by Naval Group.
- It features diesel propulsion and an additional air-independent propulsion (AIP), to be integrated in future.
About Kalvari-class:
- The Kalvari class is based on Scorpene-class submarines built for the Indian Navy with diesel-electric attack capacity.
- Defence Ministry of India approved Project-75 in 1997 that allows Indian Navy to acquire 24 submarines.
- Eventually Scorpene class submarines were chosen for the project.
- A total of 6 submarines are being built under the project and the class is named after the first ship of the group: INS Kalvari.
- INS Khanderi, INS Karanj, INS Vela, INS Vagir and INS Vagsheer (upcoming) are other submarines in the class.
- They are being at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, a PSU in Mumbai.
- These submarines can target submarines are well as surface ships. And carry deadly armament of torpedoes for the purpose.
About INS Vagir:
- Vagir is a Kalvari class diesel-electric attack submarine.
- INS Vagir is the fifth of six Scorpene-class submarines being built in India
- It has been named after a sandfish which is found in the Indian Ocean.
