Why in news?

  • IRCON International has been appointed as 'Project Implementation Agency' for Construction of Road from Paletwa (Myanmar) to Zorinpuri (Mizoram) under Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) in Myanmar, on EPC mode at Lump Sum cost of Rs.1780 crore by Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.

About Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project:

  • It connects seaport of Kolkata with Sittwe seaport in Rakhine State, Myanmar through the sea route.
  • In Myanmar, it will then link Sittwe seaport to Paletwa in Chin State via the Kaladan river boat route, and then from Paletwa by road to Mizoram state in Northeast India.
  • All components of the project, including Sittwe port and power, river dredging, Paletwa jetty, have reportedly been completed, except this Zorinpuri-Paletwa road.
  • The project was initially scheduled to be completed by 2014.

???????Why this project got delayed?

  • The route of the project along the Paletwa and Kaladan river is troubled because of the Chin conflict and the Rohingya conflict. 
  • It is also troubled because of militant groups like Arakan Army. Because of these conflicts the project got delayed.

About IRCON

  • IRCON International is an engineering and construction, specialized in transport infrastructure and is wholly owned by the India’s Ministry of Railways.
  • Government of India holds 73.18 percent stake in the company.
