Why in news?
- Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) and BP plc have announced the start of production from R-Cluster, the ultra-deepwater gas field in the KG basin’s D6 block.
About the basin:
- Krishna Godavari Basin is an extensive deltaic plain formed by two large east coast rivers Krishna and Godavari.
- It is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh and the adjoining areas of Bay of Bengal in which these rivers discharge their water.
- Its onland part covers an area of 15000 sq. km and the offshore part covers an area of 25,000 sq. km up to 1000 m isobath.
- The Krishna Godavari Basin is an established hydrocarbon province with a resource base of 1130 MMT, of which, 555 MMT are assessed for the offshore region.
- Several oil and gas fields are located both in onland and offshore parts of the basin.
- The site is known for the D-6 block where Reliance Industries discovered the biggest natural gas reserves in India in 2003.
- East West Gas Pipeline transports gas from KG Basin, primarily the D-6 Block to Bharuch (Gujarat) for processing.
About the new gas field:
- Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) and BP together are developing three deepwater gas projects in KG-D6 Block — R-Cluster, Satellites Cluster and MJ.
- These three clusters together are expected to meet 15% of India’s gas demand by 2023.
- R-Cluster is the first of the three projects to come on stream and is located at a water depth of greater than 2,000 m, it is the deepest offshore gas field in Asia.
