Why in news?

• The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the Kuki community, has urged Prime Minister to “seriously consider” simultaneous settlement of Kuki and Naga “aspirations for self-governance” within the Union of India so as to rule out imminent “adverse” repercussions of a settlement between the Centre and the NSCN (I-M) that could affect Kuki-inhabited areas.

About Kukis:

• Kuki Tribes of Manipur are an ethnic group which spread over the vast areas of North eastern regions of India, North western regions of Burma and the foot hills of Chittagong Hill tracts.
• In India, the Kuki tribes are mainly found in the areas of Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Assam.
• This dispersal across international borders is a culmination of punitive actions made by the British during their occupation of India.
• The term Kuki is predominantly used in India to denote the hill tribes of Manipur while the term “chin” is used in Myanmar.
• The majority of Kukis are now Christians.
• The Kukis have constantly in conflict with Nagas with whom they occupy the hill tracts of Manipur.
