Why in news?
- Cabinet approves MoU between India and Nepal for bridge construction over Mahakali river.
About Mahakali river:
- The Kali/Mahakali River in the Kalapani region demarcates the border between India and Nepal.
- The river originates at Kalapani in the Himalayas at an elevation of 3,600 m in the Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand.
- Mahakali river is also known as Sharda river or Kali Ganga in Uttarakhand.
- It joins Ghagra river in Uttar Pradesh, which is a tributary of Ganga.
- Important projects in the river:
- Tanakpur hydro-electric project
- Chameliya hydro-electric project
- Sharda Barrage.
About Mahakali Treaty:
- The Mahakali Treaty, signed in 1996 between India and Nepal, pertains to sharing water of the river.
- From the Sarada Barrage, the Treaty gives Nepal 28.3 cumec (1000 cusec) of water in the wet season and 4.25 cumec (150 cusec) in the dry season. This quantity is to be supplied from the Tanakpur Barrage if the Sarada Barrage turns non-functional.
