Why in news?

• Recently, a massive Avalanche hit Sikkim's Nathu La.

About Nathu La:

• It is a mountain pass in the Dongkya Range of the Himalayas between Tibet (China), and the Indian states of Sikkim and West Bengal
• Nathu La is one of the highest motorable roads in the world,
• Nathu means 'listening ears', and La means 'pass'.
• It is an open trading border post between India and China.
• It was diplomatically sealed by China and India after the 1962 Sino-Indian War.  However it was re-opened in 2006. The opening of the pass provides an alternative route to the pilgrimage of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar
