Why in news?
- The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has partnered with the Department of Fertilizers to conduct field trials on NHAI projects for the use of Phosphogypsum in National Highway Construction.
About Phosphogypsum:
- Phosphogypsum is a by-product of fertilizer production.
- Although gypsum is a widely used material in the construction industry, phosphogypsum is usually not used, but is stored indefinitely because of its weak radioactivity caused by the presence of naturally occurring uranium and thorium.
- Recently phosphogypsum has been found to be an effective material for road construction.
- An Indian fertilizer company has constructed a road using Phosphor-Gypsum.
Significance:
- The use of Phosphogypsum in road construction aligns with the principles of a circular economy. This process encourages the use of waste material to create new products, thus reducing waste and conserving resources.
Other applications phosphogypsum:
- Artificial reefs and oyster beds
- Cover for landfills
- Roof tiles
- Soil conditioner
