Why in news?

  • The Aga Khan Trust for Culture is set to withdraw from the Qutb Shahi Tombs restoration and conservation project in Hyderabad it handled for the past decade and where the present MoU expires in January 2022.

Qutb Shahi Tombs:

  • The Qutub Shahi Tombs are located in the Ibrahim Bagh (garden precinct), close to Golconda Fort in Hyderabad
  • They contain the tombs and mosques built by the various kings of the Qutb Shahi dynasty
    • The Qutb Shahi dynasty ruled the Golconda Sultanate in south India from 1512 AD to 1687 AD
    • After the collapse of Bahmani Sultanate, the Qutb Shahi dynasty was established in 1512 AD by Quli Qutb Mulk who assumed the title of "Sultan".
    • In 1636, Shah Jahan forced the Qutb Shahis to recognize Mughal suzerainty.
    • The dynasty came to an end in 1687 during the reign of its seventh Sultan Abul Hasan Qutb Shah, when Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb seized Golconda fort and occupied the kingdom
  • Qutb Shahi Tombs are built in Persian, Hindu and Pathani styles of architecture.
  • The tombs were planned and built by numerous monarchs who ruled the state during the 18th century.
  • One of the most impressive tombs belongs to the founder of Hyderabad, Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah which rises to a height of 42 meters.
