Why in news?

  • The Sahitya Akademi on 31st December 2021 announced its awards for 2021 for literary works.

About Sahitya Akademi Awards:

  • The Sahitya Akademi annually confers on writers of the most outstanding books of literary merit published in any of the 24 major Indian languages.
  • English, Rajasthani and the 22 listed languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution is recognized by the Sahitya Akademi.
  • Established in 1954, the award comprises a plaque and a cash prize of Rs.1,00,000.
  • The Sahitya Akademi award is the second-highest literary honour by the Government of India, after the Jnanpith award.
  • Criteria for Choosing Awardee:
    • The author must be of Indian Nationality.
    • Book or work eligible for the award must be an outstanding contribution to the language and literature to which it belongs.

About Sahitya Akademi:

  • The Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, is an organisation dedicated to the promotion of literature in the languages of India, founded in 1954.
  • It is an autonomous body under the ministry of Culture.
