Why in news?

  • Sundari, a tigress which had come from Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh in June 2018, was sent back from Satkosia Tiger Reserve after it killed two people..

About the reserve:

  • Satkosia Tiger Reserve is a tiger reserve located in the Angul district of Odisha, India covering an area of 988.30 km².
  • It is located where the Mahanadi River passes through a 22 km long gorge in the Eastern Ghats mountains.
  • The tiger reserve is located in the Eastern Highlands moist deciduous forests ecoregion.
  • The major plant communities are mixed deciduous forests including Sal (Shorea robusta), and riverine forest.
  • Mammals found include the leopard, indian wild dog or the (dhole), wild boars , striped hyena, sloth bear, leopard cat and the jungle cat.
  • The major herbivores include the Asian elephant , Spotted deer, sambar deer, barking deer, langurs, porcupines and pangolins etc.

Relocation program:

  • There are no Tigers in the reserve currently.
  • The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), had approved the transfer of six tigers from the Madhya Pradesh.
  • This was the first inter-state tiger translocation project in India.
