• A carbon dating analysis of rice with soil, found in a burial urn at Sivakalai in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, by the Miami-based Beta Analytic Testing Laboratory has yielded the date of 1155 BC, indicating that the Thamirabarani civilisation dates back to 3,200 years.

Thamirabarani river civilization:

• Thamirabarani civilization also known as the Porunai civilisation, dates back to 3,200 years.
• This is the oldest civilization in South India perhaps, older than the Vaigai civilization which is believed to be 2,600 years old.
• The Thamirabarani civilisation is named after the Thamirabarani river (old Tamil name of the river is Porunai), as rivers have a unique association with civilisations.
• Thamirabarani is a river that originates in the Western Ghats (from the Agastyarkoodam peak of Pothigai hills) and empties into the sea at the Gulf of Mannar after passing through Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts.
