Why in news?
- Two new Ramsar sites have been declared
About the new sites:
- Lonar Lake, Maharashtra: Also known as Lonar crater, it is a notified National Geo-heritage Monument, saline, soda lake, located in Buldhana district, Maharashtra. Lonar Lake was created by an asteroid collision with earth impact during the Pleistocene Epoch.
- Sur Sarovar, Uttar Pradesh: Also known as Keetham lake, it is a scenic lake just outside Agra. Alongside the Keetham Lake is the Agra Bear Rescue Facility, which is a Sloth bear rescue facility dedicated to rehabilitating previously enslaved 'dancing bears'. There are artificially created islands for shelter and breeding grounds to the migratory birds.
- With the new sites, India now has 41 RAMSAR sites.
