Why in news?

• On the recommendation of one of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) panels, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and other global federations investigated Russia for doping activities.

About World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA):

• World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was established in 1999
• It is headquartered in Montreal, Canada
• It was set up as a foundation under the initiative of the IOC with the support and participation of intergovernmental organizations, governments, public authorities, and other public and private bodies fighting doping in sport
• It was formed pursuant to the terms of the Lausanne Declaration, which provided for the creation of an independent international anti-doping
• WADA is responsible for the World Anti-Doping Code, adopted by more than 650 sports organizations, including international sports federations, national anti-doping organizations, the IOC, and the International Paralympic Committee
• It aims to lead a collaborative worldwide movement for doping-free sport

Functions:

• Protecting the rights of all athletes in relation to anti-doping, contributing to the integrity in sport
• Developing policies, procedures and practices that reflect justice, equity and integrity
• The organisation is impartial and transparent, listens to the voice of the athletes and strive to be diverse
• It develops innovative and practical solutions to enable stakeholders to implement anti-doping programs

World Anti-Doping Code:

• It is the core document that harmonizes anti-doping policies, rules and regulations within sport organizations and among public authorities around the world.
• It works in conjunction with eight International Standards which aim to foster consistency among anti-doping organizations in various areas.
• In 2003, the first Code was approved in Copenhagen.
