Why in news?

  • India signed an agreement with the United Nation’s World Food Programme (WFP) for the distribution of 50,000 MT of wheat that it has committed to sending Afghanistan as part of a humanitarian assistance.

About World Food Programme:

  • World Food Programme (WFP) is an organization established in 1961 by the United Nations (UN) to help alleviate world hunger.
  • Its headquarters are in Rome, Italy.
  • In 2020 the World Food Programme (WFP) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace “for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.”

WFP Functioning:

  • WFP is funded completely by voluntary donations.
  • It is governed by an Executive Board composed of 36 member states.
  • It works in close tandem with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
  • WFP also works in collaboration with several national and global non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
  • It is a member of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
  • It is headed by an Executive Director, who is jointly appointed by the Secretary-General of the UN and the Director-General of the FAO.

Report Released by WFP:

  • Global Report on Food Crisis: The report describes the scale of acute hunger in the world. It provides an analysis of the drivers that are contributing to food crises across the globe.
