Article 371-A

IN NEWS:

• Citing the collapse of Law and order in the state, Nagaland governor R. N Ravi in a letter to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has proposed important law and order decisions like transfers and postings of officials will be only after the former's approval.

ABOUT ARTICLE 371 A:

• Article 371-A makes some special provisions for Nagaland:
  • It says in some matters the Acts of Parliament relating to the following matters would not apply to Nagaland unless the State Legislative Assembly so decides. This includes laws that may interfere with customs, social practices etc of Nagas and the ownership of their land.
  • It entrusts the Governor of Nagaland with special responsibility for law and order in the state . In such matters he exercises his individual judgement and is not bound by the council of ministers.
  • A regional council consisting of 35 members should be established for the Tuensang district of the state.
