Why in news?

China has announced plans to increase the global reach of its home-grown Beidou satellite navigation system, which is promoted as an alternative to America’s Global Positioning System (GPS).

About Beidou Satellite System:

The Beidou satellite (BDS) navigation system is a constellation of 30 satellites in orbit, independently constructed and operated by China and currently in use in more than half of the world’s countries.
