- Concerns have been expressed over the diversion of a part of Dehing Patkai wildlife sanctuary for a coal-mining project.
ABOUT THE SANCTUARY:
- Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia Districts of Assam. This sanctuary is also a part of Dehing-Patkai Elephant Reserve.
- The Dehing Patkai forms the largest stretch of tropical lowland rainforests in India.
- Being a completely virgin rainforest, this sanctuary is rich in biodiversity. It is home to over 100 varieties of orchids.
- There are more than a dozen different ethnic groups living in the area.
