Why in news?
- Sri Lankan government has said that no final decision on East Container Terminal has been taken yet.
About ECT:
- The East Container Terminal is located in Colombo and adjoins the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT) developed by Sri Lanka Ports authority and China Merchants Port Holdings Company Limited.
- As per the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed by Sri Lanka with India and Japan, Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) was to retain 100 per cent ownership of ECT.
- As per ECT, a jointly-owned terminal operations company — 51 per cent stake with Sri Lanka, and 49 per cent with India and Japan — would run the terminal.
- The terminal development project is estimated to cost between $500 million and $700 million.
- Once completed, the ECT would have a capacity similar to the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT).
- The depth of the ECT, at 18m, will allow it to handle large container shipments along with other massive ships and oil tankers.
