Line of Actual Control

IN NEWS:

• Clashes have broken out between India and China along the line of actual control.

ABOUT LAC:

• The Line of Actual Control (LAC) is a loose demarcation line that India and china after the 1962 war.
• There are two common ways in which the term "Line of Actual Control" is used.
  • In the narrow sense, it refers only to the line of control in the western sector of the borderland between the two countries. ie in Ladakh region
  • In the wider sense, it can be used to refer to both the western line of control and the MacMahon Line, in which sense it is the effective border between India and the People's Republic of China (PRC).
• The lines are well demarcated in Eastern sector along Mac Mohan line although the Chinese dispute it as well.
• The middle sector of the line along Sikkim is the least controversial while the western sector is the most disputed.
• The LAC is only a concept – it is not agreed upon by the two countries, neither delineated on a map or demarcated on the ground. Thus it is different from the mutually accepted Line of Control along Pakistani border.
