WHY IN NEWS?

The last faction of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) in Assam has called a truce.

ABOUT NDFB

  • The National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) is an armed separatist outfit which seeks to obtain a sovereign Boroland/Bodoland for the Bodo people.
  • It is designated as a terrorist organisation by the Government of India.
  • NDFB traces its origin to Bodo Security Force, a militant group formed in 1986. The current name was adopted in 1994, after the group rejected Bodo Accord signed between the Government of India and ABSU-BPAC (Bodo Peoples' Action Committee).
  • The group has carried out several attacks in Assam, targeting non-Bodo civilians as well as the security forces.
  • NDFB has three factions as it split over the years due to difference in opinion – NDFB(P) [Progressive], NDFB(R) and NDFB(S).
  • The NDFB-S is the third and last faction of the outfit that was formed more than three decades ago for establishing a sovereign homeland for the Bodos — the largest plains tribe in the Northeast.
  • The Central and Assam governments and the NDFB’s Saoraigwra faction, or NDFB-S, have now signed a tripartite agreement in New Delhi for the cessation of operations.
