Why in news?
- The Ministry of Culture (MoC) and Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for ‘Cooperation in Development of National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat’ in New Delhi
About NMHC:
- It will display the India’s heritage of inland waterways and trade through water route.
- The development will be done in an area expanding 400 acres.
- The complex will have many offerings including National Maritime Heritage Museum, Heritage Theme Park, and Light House Museum along with Museum Themed Hotels as well Maritime themed eco-resorts, and Maritime Institute.
- Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Culture and together, they will cooperate in making of this heritage complex.
- India and Portugal has also signed an MoU in 2020 for development of NMHC.
- NMHC would be developed as an international tourist destination, where the maritime heritage of India from ancient to modern times would be showcased and an edutainment approach using the latest technology would be adopted to spread awareness about India’s maritime heritage.
- Artefacts from sites like Lothal and Dholavira will be allowed for display at NMHC complex.
