PPP partnerships in airports

Why in news?

• Adani Group has taken over Lucknow and Mangalore airports from AAI on lease for 50 years.

About Airports Authority of India:

• Airports Authority of India (AAI) was constituted under Airports Authority of India Act, 1994.
• It is entrusted with the responsibility of creating, upgrading, maintaining and managing civil aviation infrastructure both on the ground and air space in the country.
• AAI manages 137 airports, which include 24 International Airports (including 3 International Civil Enclaves), 10 Customs Airports (including 4 Customs Civil Enclaves), 80 Domestic Airports and 23 Domestic Civil Enclaves at Defence airfields.
• AAI also provides Air Traffic Management Services (ATMS) over entire Indian Air Space and adjoining oceanic areas with ground installations at all Airports and 25 other locations to ensure safety of Aircraft operations.

PPP in airports:

• The Union government had recently conducted bidding for leasing out six airports of Airports Authority of India for operation, management and development through the Public Private Partnership.
• The airports that were leased out were Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram and Mangalore.
• After a competitive bidding process, the Adani group won the rights to run all of them for 50 years.
• Airports Authority of India (AAI) will get ?1,070 crore upfront from handing over the airports for redevelopment.
• Presently, airports being managed under PPP model include Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Cochin.
• With PPP model, airports will be provided with world-class infrastructure while it will also contribute to the delivery of efficient and timely services to air passengers.
• AAI has announced that the communication navigation services will be retained under  it and only airport operations will be leased out.
