IN NEWS:
- Wildlife Institute of India(WII) has begun a study on the migration of the pied cuckoo, which will entail tracing the path taken by the bird through different seasons and regions across the world
About the bird:
- The Jacobin cuckoo, pied cuckoo or the pied crested cuckoo, is a member of the cuckoo order of birds that is found in Africa and Asia.
- It is partially migratory and in India, it has been considered a harbinger of the monsoon rains due to the timing of its arrival.
- In some parts of south India, pied cuckoos are found throughout the year.
- In contrast to the pied cuckoo birds found in southern states, the pied cuckoo birds in northern India are believed to come from Africa as migratory birds while the former are resident birds.
- Pied cuckoo is one of the very few birds that comes to India during the summer months unlike most migratory birds who frequent the country during winters only.
