Why in news?

  • ISRO successfully launched its second developmental flight of a Small Satellite Launch Vehicle — SSLV-D2 — and placed three satellites in a precise orbit.

About SSLV-D2:

  • The SSLV-D2 mission put three satellites:

About  AzaadiSAT:

Azaadi satellite has been designed by 750 girl students of government schools in rural areas from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

The satellite is the result of ISRO pushing for girls to take up Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

    • ISRO’s Earth Observation Satellite EOS 07
    • U.S.-based firm’s Antaris’ Janus-1
    • Chennai-based space startup SpaceKidz’s AzaadiSAT-2.
  • SSLV-D1 is considered as a partial failure as it failed to place the satellite in the desired orbit because of a shortfall in velocity.

About Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV):

  • It aims for launching small satellites commercially at drastically reduced price and higher launch rate as compared to PSLV.
  • It has a payload capacity of 600 kg to Low Earth orbit or 300 kg to Sun synchronous orbit.
  • The first three stages of the vehicle use solid propellant, with a fourth stage being a velocity-trimming module.
  • Unlike the PSLV and GSLV, the SSLV can be assembled both vertically and horizontally.
  • The SSLV promises on-demand access to space, with the rocket assembly taking a mere 15 days and minimum personnel to do it.

The vehicle would help in:

  • Reduced turn-around time
  • Launch on demand
  • Cost optimization for realization and operation
  • Flexibility in accommodating Multiple Satellites
  • Minimum launch infrastructure requirements
  • Heritage of proven design practices

Operated by:

  • SSLV aims to cater to the commercial satellite launch market and it is to be operated by Antrix Corporation, ISRO’s commercial arm.
  • A new spaceport, under development, near Kulasekharapatnam in Tamil Nadu will handle SSLV.
