• Kerala Chief Minister has inaugurated the first-ever cargo ship at the under-construction Vizhinjam international seaport project.

About Vizhinjam Port

• Vizhinjam port is located near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It is India’s first deepwater container transhipment port.
• The port is located just ten nautical miles from the international shipping route.
• This transhipment terminal can handle ultra-large ships and marks India’s entry into the transhipment club.
• It has the potential to compete with global ports like Colombo, Singapore, Port Klang, and Jebel Ali.
• The port offers large-scale automation for quick turnaround of vessels.
• It is being built by Adani Ports and SEZ Private Limited on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) model.
• It is the first greenfield port project to receive viability gap funding from the government of India.
