Why in news?

  • India’s ranking in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI-2020) has slipped from 80 to 86 compared to the year 2019.

About Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI)

  • It is prepared by Transparency International.
  • First launched in 1995 by the Transparency International, the Index has been widely credited with putting the issue of corruption on the international policy agenda.
  • Transparency International is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to fighting corruption. It was founded in 1993 and is based in Berlin, Germany.
  • It is a composite index that draws from 12 surveys to rank nations around the globe.
  • It has become a benchmark gauge of perceptions of corruption and is used by analysts and investors.
  • The index is also based on expert opinions of public sector corruption and takes note of range of factors like whether governmental leaders are held to account or go unpunished for corruption, the perceived prevalence of bribery, and whether public institutions respond to citizens’ needs.

Ranking

  • It ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption, according to experts and businesspeople.
  • It uses a scale of zero to 100, where zero is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean. 
  • With a score of 41, India is at the 86th spot.
  • This year, New Zealand and Denmark were ranked at first position with scores of 88.
  • Somalia and South Sudan were ranked lowest at 179th position with scores of 12.
