Context: The AI Safety Summit hosted by PM Rishi Sunak at Bletchley Park, UK came to an end with the signing of the Bletchley Declaration.
About the Summit:
- It is a two day event hosted by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
- It aims to:
- Consider the risks of AI, especially at the frontier of development; and
- Discuss mitigation measures through coordinated action at the international level.
- Venue: Bletchley Park.
- It brought together international governments, leading AI companies, civil society groups and experts in research to consider the risks of AI.
- Frontier AI models hold enormous potential to power economic growth and drive scientific progress while also posing potential safety risks if not developed responsibly.
Bletchley Park: It is a significant location in the history of computer science development and once the top-secret base of the codebreakers who cracked the German ‘Enigma’ code and hastened the end of World War II.
The Bletchley Declaration on AI Safety
- The AI Safety Summit ended with the Bletchley Declaration signed by 28 countries including India.
- It aims at global cooperation in the safe development and deployment of AI.
- It is a first of its kind declaration offering a snapshot of the global understanding of AI’s risks and opportunities.
- It highlights the importance of safeguarding human rights, transparency, fairness, accountability, bias mitigation and data protection through global cooperation.
