WHY IN NEWS?

An 11-foot imposing bronze statue of Bhakta Ramadasu, the renowned saint composer of the 17th century, is all set to be unveiled at his birthplace, Nelakondapalli, Telangana, on the occasion of his 387th birth anniversary on January 29.

ABOUT BHAKTA RAMADASU

  • Kancharla Gopanna (c. 1620 – 1680), popularly known as Bhakta Ramadasu or Bhadrachala Ramadasu, was a 17th-century Indian devotee of Lord Rama and a composer of Carnatic music.
  • He is a famous Vaggeyakara (classical composer) from the Telugu classical era.
  • His contemporaries include the stalwarts of Telugu literature such as Tallapaka Annamayya, Tyagaraja, Kshetrayya, and Shyama Sastri.
  • He lived in the village of Nelakondapalli, near the town of Bhadrachalam, in Muslim-ruled Telugu country during the 16th century and is renowned for constructing a famous temple for Lord Sri Rama at Bhadrachalam
