IN NEWS:
- Human Rights Watch has called on Bangladesh to move more than 300 Rohingya refugees, including children, to the camps in Cox's Bazaar district, more than two months after they were quarantined on a small flood-prone island in the Bay of Bengal.
WHAT IS IT?
- It is an island to which Bangladesh government plans to relocate nearly one lakh Rohingyan refugees.
- Approximately 103,200 Rohingyas out of more than a million currently sheltered in the refugee camps of Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh will be moved to Bhashan Char.
- Bhasan Char is located 30km away from the mainland and is accessible only by Boats.
Concerns:
- There are doubts about the inhabitability of the island and till now no one has lived on the island.
- Large parts of this island are submerged during high tide and many fear that fear the island can be washed away by tidal surges.
- It is also highly vulnerable to Cyclones.
