WHY IN NEWS?

Ministry of Power and New & Renewable Energy released a Report on ‘Impact of energy efficiency measures for the year 2018-19.

THE REPORT

  • The report was prepared by an Expert agency PricewaterhouseCoopers Ltd, who was engaged by Bureau of Energy efficiency (BEE) for an independent verification to assess the resultant annual savings in energy as well as CO 2 emissions through various initiatives in India.
  • Findings of the Report:
    • Implementation of various energy efficiency schemes have led to total electricity savings of about 9.39% of the net electricity consumption.
    • Total energy savings is 2.69% of the total primary energy supply during 2018-19.
    • Overall, this study has estimated that various energy efficiency measures have translated into savings worth INR 89,122 crores against last year’s (2017-18) savings of INR 53,627 crore.
    • These efforts have also contributed in reducing 151.74 Million Tonnes of CO2 emissions whereas last year this number was 108 MTCO2.

ABOUT BUREAU OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY (BEE)

  • Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) was set up under the provisions of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.
  • The mission of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is to assist in developing policies and strategies with a thrust on self-regulation and market principles,
  • The primary objective of BEE is reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy.
  • It coordinates with State level agencies and energy consumers to perform functions and exercise powers that may be necessary for efficient use of energy and its conservation in India.
  • Other roles:
    • Create awareness and disseminate information on energy efficiency and conservation
    • Develop testing and certification procedures and promote testing facilities
    • Promote use of energy efficient processes, equipment, devices and systems
    • Take steps to encourage preferential treatment for use of energy efficient equipment or appliances
    • Give financial assistance to institutions for promoting efficient use of energy and its conservation
