Why in news?
- Ecuador has expressed concerns about a huge fishing fleet of mostly Chinese-flagged vessels near the Galapagos Islands protection zone.
About Galapagos:
- The Galapagos Islands, part of the Republic of Ecuador are an archipelago of volcanic islands.
- They distributed on either side of the equator in the Pacific Ocean surrounding the centre of the Western Hemisphere.
- The islands are known for their large number of endemic species that were studied by Charles Darwin contributing to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution.
- Galápagos National Park, and the Galápagos Marine Reserve, formed on the islands protects their biodiversity.
- The islands are part of the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
