Why in news?
- The Global Innovation Index (GII) has recently ranked India as the 48th most innovative nation in the world.
Who publishes it?
- The GII global ranking is published by World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) – a specialized agency of United Nations in association with Cornell University and graduate business school INSEAD.
- India’s Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is one of the knowledge partners which assists GII team in bringing out the annual ranking.
Parameters:
- GII takes into account indicators such as:
- Rule of Law, Ease of starting a Business, Ease of Getting Credit., Ease of paying taxes Regulatory Quality, Expenditure on Education, School Life Expectancy, Political Instability and Absence of Violence/Extremism, ICT Use and Access etc.
GII 2020:
- This year, India has been ranked 48th among 131 economies in GII.
- This is the first time India has broken into top 50.
- Since 2011, Switzerland has been ranked at the top every year. This year, Sweden follows at second place and U.S.A at third.
