Why in news?

  • Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released the Global Liveability Index 2023.

About Global Liveability Index:

  • Global Liveability Index quantifies the challenges presented to an individual’s lifestyle in 173 cities worldwide.
  • The index ranked the cities based on these five metrics:
    • Healthcare, Culture, Environment, Education, and Stability.
  • This ranking offers insights into the cities that excel in providing an exceptional quality of life.

Rankings of the Global Liveability Index 2023

  • Top Livable cities:
    • Vienna (Austria), Copenhagen (Denmark), Melbourne and Sydney (Australia).
  • Bottom 3 Liveable cities:
    • Algiers (Algeria), Tripoli (Libya) and Damascus (Syria).
  • India:
    •  New Delhi and Mumbai - 41st position
    • Chennai - 44th.
    • Ahmedabad – 147th.
    • Bengaluru - 148.

Observations made by the index:

  • Attempts to restore normalcy after the Covid-19 pandemic and the “incremental improvements in liveability made by many developing countries” have been the biggest drivers of changes in its global liveability rankings.
  • Those in Western Europe, in particular, have slipped in rankings due to increased instances of workers’ strikes failing to “match gains” made by cities in Asia and the Middle East.
  • The cities which are plagued by ongoing civil unrest and military conflicts, amongst other issues, remained at the bottom of the list.
