Why in news?
- A road in west London will be renamed Guru Nanak Road after the founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
About Guru Nanak:
- Guru Nanak (29 November 1469 – 22 September 1539) was the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.
- Nanak is said to have travelled far and wide across Asia teaching people his message.
- Guru Nanak's words are registered in the form of 974 poetic hymns in the holy text of Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib.
- Guru Nanak and Sikhism were influenced by the nirguni (formless God) tradition of Bhakti movement.
- Guru Nanak successor was Guru Angad.
- Sikhs believe in one God and preaches that people of different races, religions, or sex are all equal in the eyes of God.
Places in news associated with Nanak’s life:
- Nankana Sahib: Located in the Punjab province of Pakistan and is named Guru Nanak, who was born in the city and first began preaching here.
- Kartarpur Sahib: A gurdwara in Kartarpur, also in the Punjab province of Pakistan where he died.
