ABOUT ICMR:

  • The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research.
  • It was created as 1911 as Indian Research Fund Association (IRFA) with the specific objective of sponsoring and coordinating medical research in the country.
  • After independence, several important changes were made in the organisation and it was redesignated the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in 1949.
  • The ICMR is funded by the Government of India through the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • ICMR has 26 national institutes under it which dedicate themselves to research on specific health topics like tuberculosis, leprosy, cholera and diarrhoeal diseases, viral diseases including AIDS, malaria, kala-azar, oncology, medical statistics, etc.
  • It also has 6 regional medical research centres which address themselves to regional health problems.
